Tell me about Maxi Dresses, they are so cute?

I'm pretty short about 5'1 but I loove how cute maxi dresses look. I've seen celebrities like Hilary Duff and Vanessa Hudgens in Maxi Dresses also and they are around my height and the dresses look long on them also. I bought one today but i'm not sure what to do because its so long I don't want it to drag on the ground and get holes. I would say my best option would either get it altered.. :( or buy cute wedges to wear with them. (I just don't want to spend anymore money but I guess its worth it) Do people just wear it even though its super long and touches the ground? Let me know about your Maxi Dress Wearing Experiences lol...
