What happens when a cyclone crosses the Equator?

In cl we are learning about Natural Disasters and someone brought up the question "What happens when a cyclone crosses the Equator?". Cyclones can only occur in the Southern Hemisphere so now everyone wants to know what would happen when it crosses the Equator as the teacher doesn't know so I took it upon myself to find out. Any ideas???
