Can I put my SIM card into an iPhone I bought off a friend?

It should work if it doesn't, take the phone and the sim card down to AT&T and get help. You are only required to take the data plan if you buy a new subsidized iPhone. Since you're buying a used iPhone, you can do whatever you want. Just make sure you turn off the 3g capability.
